MEDIA RELEASE PR35874

Outstanding Art Researchers Graduate From RMIT

MELBOURNE, Aug. 28 /Medianet International-AsiaNet/ --

Three outstanding PhD researchers will collect their degrees from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, at

a special ceremony in Hong Kong on Sunday.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Jim Barber, who will be in Hong Kong for the ceremony, said:

"RMIT excels in research that makes a difference to our world, and the work of our outstanding PhD

researchers will make a lasting contribution to knowledge and development in the region."

Dr Evelyna Yee Woo Kan investigated the development of a contemporary viewpoint based on the

philosophy of "Qi Yun Sheng Dong" and its relationship to Chinese landscape painting.

The project successfully integrated creative processes such as photography, art installation, performance

and new media with traditional Chinese brush painting in order to construct a three dimensional, multi-

perspective experience of the landscape genre in painting.

Dr Steven Woon-Cheong Lam explored the role of portraiture, the representation of the human face, within a

narrative context. His investigation incorporated painting, photography, digital imaging and printmaking to

portray the psycho-social impact of science and technology within a sometimes alien and hostile post

modernist world.

The new knowledge from his investigative discourse and his novel artistic language have significantly

advanced the genre of portraiture and have charged it with new possibilities as an expressive force in

contemporary art.

Dr Ying Chi Tang conducted research into the potential for the use of fabric and associated processes, such

as stitching, as an alternative media to those normally regarded as traditional materials within the context of

Western painting.

The research project focused on the veil in a symbolic and metaphorical context, to mediate and

communicate issues of cultural identity within contemporary Hong Kong.

More than 500 graduands will receive academic awards for their studies completed at RMIT in Melbourne,

Australia, and at the University's partner institutions in Hong Kong at the graduation ceremony.

Interview/photo opportunities: Sunday, 30 August, at 10am and 2pm, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. (2pm for the

three PhD researchers)
