RMIT arts showcase puts budding talent in spotlight
Some of Melbournes best emerging artists and designers will showcase their work
in one of the biggest festivals of art in the Southern Hemisphere RMIT
Universitys 2008 Art, Design and Multimedia Graduate Exhibitions.
The festival, which runs from of the end of this month to mid-December, will feature
leading RMIT student and graduate work from a range of programs including fashion,
photography, creative media, visual and fine arts.
Launching the 2008 program today, RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President,
Professor Margaret Gardner AO, said up to 50 exhibitions would be spread across
galleries and spaces across the city and inner suburbs.
The public exhibitions are a wonderful opportunity for the community to discover
the artists and designers who will become the future leaders of the art world,
Professor Gardner said.
From its beginnings as the Working Mens College in the heart of Melbourne,
RMIT opened its doors to arts students. Today, as a dual-sector university offering
a multitude of art and design programs from vocational to postgraduate levels, we
are proud to continue the tradition of educating and nurturing the citys most
creative minds.
Professor Colin Fudge, Pro Vice-Chancellor of RMITs College of Design and
Social Context, said the high calibre of work at the graduate shows attracted
thousands of visitors each year.
The energy and vibrancy of our students is inspiring and the diversity of the work
they produce each year is astounding, Professor Fudge said.
Its no wonder that some of the biggest names in the arts and design industry use
these shows to scout for talent. With exhibitions ranging from furniture, industrial
design, architecture, gold and silver smithing to animation, printmaking, ceramics
and textiles, there will be something for everyone at this years graduate shows.
