X-Field – design practice in the margins

The X-Field exhibition showcases new work from a group of practitioners and

researchers at RMIT University who work across the disciplines of art, architecture,

landscape architecture and urbanism.

The collaborators from RMIT’s School of Architecture and Design include Charles

Anderson, Richard Black, Melanie Dodd, Sand Helsel, Andrea Mina and Sue Anne

Ware, with contributions from Richard Goodwin and Lynda Roberts, among others.

They work in the margins of their disciplines where they have discovered fertile

grounds for conversation and action: places of becoming, transaction, negotiation,

and improvisation.

Their investigations are field-based and include the ephemeral and transitory; the

ordinary and everyday. New readings are offered for the family home, a park

bench, the Murray River, mops and brooms, and discarded gum.

X-Field highlights their way of acting – their ethics – and the techniques they invent

and employ at many spatial and temporal scales. They reveal the invisible systems

that make things the way they are, and speculate upon what they can be.

“The project has a social and public agenda,” curator Sand Helsel said.

“We have made the work deliberately accessible, unlike many design practitioners,

in order to engage a broader audience into different ways of looking at and

operating within their environments.”

The exhibition starts its journey in Melbourne at fortyfive downstairs gallery and will

continue the conversation with similar communities of citizens and practitioners in

Beijing, Seoul and Taipei before returning to Melbourne with an expanded

dialogue.

X-Field, which is supported by the RMIT Design Research Institute and School of

Architecture and Design, runs from 18 to 28 August.
