Animated shorts light up Fed Square

Film lovers will have the chance to catch some of the top animated shorts of the

year tomorrow, when RMIT University animation students showcase their work in a

free screening at Federation Square.

The RMIT Master of Creative Media (Animation and Interactive Media) 2009

Student Showcase kicks off at 7.30pm on Friday, 4 December, on the giant screen.

The showcase will include the stop motion “George and the Dragon”, which was

recently awarded the ACMI and Viskatoons Award of Excellence for Best Animated

Production 2009 by the Centre for Animation and Interactive Media at RMIT.

“George and the Dragon” creator Nasser Samman said he was overwhelmed by

the positive reaction his film had received.

“I was completely surprised when I won the award but very happy to be

acknowledged,” he said.

“The award has lifted my spirits and has encouraged me to apply for a number of

film festivals, though I strongly believe that you should never make a film – or any

product for that matter – to win an award.

“Rather you should make something or invest time into creating something that is

rewarding for you, and if you do win something along the way, well that’s a bonus.”

“George and the Dragon” celebrates the art of stop motion animation with a story

about two very different yet intriguing characters.

George, not the brightest of knights, ventures into the dark woods to slay the

ferocious dragon. Upon confronting the winged beast, George soon realises that

appearances can often be misleading.

The film screening is part of RMIT University’s 2009 Art, Design and Multimedia

Exhibitions, which conclude on Thursday, 10 December.
