ASTRA Launches New Campaign Website to Modernise Televised Sport Regulations

ASTRA CEO Petra Buchanan today announced the launch of a new website (www.fairgosport.com.au) which has been developed to encourage avid sports fans to take part in the Federal Government's review of the anti-siphoning rules so that more sport can be shown on TV.

"If you want more sport on TV, and especially live sport, visit our site and make your voice heard," Ms Buchanan said.

ASTRA is calling on the Government to reduce the size of the 'anti-siphoning' list which restricts the broadcast of more than 1,300 sporting events a year.

"The list is well past its 'use-by date' for the modern media environment and for Australians who demand control of their own TV viewing," Ms Buchanan said.

"It's important to note that we are not asking for a single sporting event now shown on the old TV networks to be removed from the protected list. As it stands, the list lets the old networks control what sport you can watch, when you can watch it and even whether you can watch it at all. They show only a small fraction of sports live, despite huge demand from avid sports fans for more live sport.

"We want to give sports fans the choice to see more live sport on whatever form of media they choose. We're asking for subscription television and other media to have a fair chance to make sport available to the fans" Ms Buchanan said.
