Australias most loved events to be celebrated
at national awards ceremony in Sydney tomorrow night
From Sydneys New Years Eve Fireworks display that stops the world and music tours like
AC/DC selling out in seconds flat, to the local community festivals that put regional towns
on the map, the masterminds behind some of Australias greatest events this year will
gather in Sydney tomorrow night for the 2010 Australian Event Awards (7 October).
Held at the venue for one of Australias greatest events of all time, Sydney Olympic Park,
the Australian Event Awards is a celebration of all the different types of events that
Australians love and support throughout the year, including sporting grand finals, arts
and cultural festivals, community events, business conferences and more.
Australian events make a contribution to our economy in excess of $22 billion each
year, employing over 260,000 people and touching the lives of Australians every single
day of their lives, whether they are planning their next holiday or simply deciding what
they are going to do that evening, said Sandy Hollway, former CEO of SOCOG and co-
chair of the judges in the Australian Event Awards.
Tomorrow night will be a celebration of the greatest events held in Australia in the past
year, the ones which have entertained their audiences with their outstanding level of
creativity, and been innovative in such a way that can inspire other events.
Events competing for recognition at the Awards tomorrow night include the 2010
Australian Open, the Biennale of Sydney, Peats Ridge Sustainable Arts and Music Festival,
the St Kilda Festival and AC/DCs Black Ice World Tour.
While the judging has been left to a panel of event experts, the people of Australia also
have a chance to have their say in what is Australias Favourite Event of the year, with
Over 60,000 votes have already been cast from across Australia leaving a shortlist of
Australias Top Ten Favourite Events to choose from, including Jessica Watsons
Homecoming, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, the Sydney Royal Easter Show, the
Mothers Day Classic and Australias premier event for pets, the Million Paws Walk.
Also voted in by the Australian public are Sydneys New Years Eve Fireworks, the 2010
Santos Tour Down Under, the Sun Herald City2Surf, the Club Marine Southern 80 Ski
Race and the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.
