Exclusive `Picasso & his collection' exhibition opens at GoMA


WHAT: Media preview for the major `Picasso & his collection' exhibition.

WHERE: Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), Stanley Place, South Bank

WHEN: 10.30am-1.00pm Sunday 8 June 2008

The exhibition continues at the Gallery of Modern Art until 14 September 2008.

* For the first time outside Europe, `Picasso & his collection' is showing
exclusively in Brisbane and features more than 100 works from Picasso's
own art collection, along with more than 80 works by the artist himself
and documentary photographs.

* Works by artists such as Matisse, Renoir, Czanne, Rousseau, Miro,
Modigliani and Braque feature as well as Oceanic and African sculptures
and an early 20th century mask from Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait.

* Works by Picasso and the artists in his personal collection are displayed
in an integrated display to reveal the lines of artistic influence.

* Key works include Picasso's Tte de femme (Head of a woman) 1921 and Nu
dans un jardin (Nude in a garden) 1934, Paul Czanne's Cinq baigneuses
(Five bathers) 187778, La mer l'Estaque (The sea at l'Estaque) 187879,
Henri Matisse's Nature morte aux oranges ou Corbeille d'oranges (Still
life with oranges or Basket of oranges) 1912 and Tulipes et hutres sur
fond noir (Tulips and oysters on a black background) 1943.

* Portraits by Henri Rousseau and Amedeo Modigliani feature as well as
several cubist still life images by Georges Braque including La guitare.

PICTURE OPPORTUNITIES:

* Anne Baldassari, Director muse national Picasso, Paris with key
Picasso and his collection works in the exhibition.

* Children making masks and paper sculptures as part of the "Yo Picasso
Kids" program on the upper level of the Children's Art Centre.

* Young people in the contemporary media lounge of the Children's Art
Centre watching live-streamed TV and creating their own music tracks
with interactive DJ turntables.
