Japan Receives Four Nomations in the 4th Annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards

Japanese films have received four nominations in the 2010 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the region's highest
accolade in film, including three nominations in the Best Animated Feature Film category for films from renowned
animation studios Production I.G, Shochiku and Sunrise.
The fourth nomination, in the Best Screenplay category, is for Caterpillar (screenwriters Hisako Kurosawa and
Deru Deguchi). Caterpillar has already received considerable international recognition, including a Golden Bear
Award nomination at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival and the Best Actress Award at Berlin for Shinobu
Terajima.
The three films nominated for Best Animated Feature Film are:
Ibara no Ou (King of Thorn), produced by Yasumasa Tsuchiya;
Mai Mai Shinko to Sennen no Maho (Mai Mai Miracle), produced by Tomohiko Iwase, Miho Ichii, Ryoichiro Matsuo;
and, Hottarake no Shima - Haruka to Maho no Kagami (Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror), produced by
Daisuke Sekiguchi, Katsuji Morishita.
Nominees were determined by the APSA Nominations Council, Chaired by Professor Hong Joon-Kim.
Speaking about Caterpillar director Kôji Wakamatsu, APSA Nominations Council member and Variety critic,
Russell Edwards, said: "Kôji Wakamatsu is a brave filmmaker and he's an audacious film maker on a wider
historical level and also in terms of what he asks his actors to do and what he asks the actors to go through. He is
unafraid - he wants to make sure we get his point, and he does it in a way that doesn't feel like a lecture, it's
sincere, it's focused and very pointed, and yet, it is also dramatically engaging."
In all, 31 documentary, animated, children's and feature films from 15 countries and areas have been nominated
for the 2010 Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
The 2010 Nominees are automatically inducted into the Academy of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards making them
eligible to apply for the MPA APSA Academy Film Fund, a new US$100,000 script development fund supported by
the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and available exclusively to Academy members. The film fund submission
period closes on October 29.
The International Jury headed by Academy Award-winning producer Lord David Puttnam will assemble on
Australia's Gold Coast in late November ahead of the APSA Ceremony on December 2. The Awards Ceremony
