Pebble Beach Daimler is first Motorclassica entrant
A gigantic 1928 Daimler limousine, fresh
from Pebble Beach, is the first entrant in
Motorclassica, the Australian International
Concours dElegance & Classic Motor
Show in Melbourne next October.
The Daimler P.1.50 Double Six, standing
6.4 metres long and 2.0 metres high, made
a successful debut at Pebble Beach Concours dElegance after a nut-and-bolt restoration.
It won a European Classic Closed class award at Pebble Beach this year before sweeping all
before it to win Best of Show at its home-state Concours in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Owner and restorer Bob Lorkowski, whose previous work has won numerous Pebble Beach
awards, is keen to bring it to Australia not only for Motorclassica, but to bring it home, as it
was first sold in Sydney where it was registered NSW 1.
The car was originally bought by Sir Frederick Stewart in Sydney, and was one of only 12
Daimler Double Sixes ever built with the larger 7.1 litre, 12 cylinder engine, he said.
It really is a huge car, which you can see in pictures where Im standing beside it Im 64
(190 cm) and it towers over me and everything about it is larger than life.
It is also believed to be the only surviving example of the type, as most of these large cars in
England were melted down for the war effort, whereas this one was safely in Australia.

The Lorkowski Daimler carries factory-built coachwork in the Royal Limousine style which
is notable for its vee-shaped windscreen and imposing but restrained British styling.
Its Royal connection is in more than name, as Daimler was the car of the British Royal
Family until the mid-1950s, and King George V had a special-bodied example of this model.
The inaugural Motorclassica will be staged at Melbournes Royal Exhibition Building in
Carlton Gardens, from 22 to 24 October 2010.
Motorclassica will bring together more than 100 rare classic cars from around the world for
the Concours dElegance, along with a Classic Motor Show, classic and vintage car auctions
and a free Picnic with the Classics outdoor display in Argyle Square, Carlton.
It will be a nine-day celebration of classic motoring, beginning with the six-day Tour
Australis road tour taking in the scenic, cultural and epicurean delights of Victoria.
Motorclassica director Paul Mathers said Bob Lorkowskis car was a magnificent first entrant
for the Concours, and set a high standard of competition right from the start.
Bob has done a magnificent job on this car, stripping it literally to every nut and bolt, and
the smallest items of trim and mechanical equipment, to bring it back to its authentic and
magnificent original form, he said.
But he will enjoy plenty of worthy competition for local collectors who are planning to
enter have cars which will hold their own against anything from anywhere in the world.
