Sony Foundation to rock Woolloomooloo Wharf to tackle youth cancer
Sydney 18 October, 2010 On Thursday, 21 October 2010, Sony Foundation Australia will
take over the full line-up of restaurants at Sydneys Woolloomooloo Wharf to host its second
annual lunchtime fundraising event: Wharf4Ward. The star-studded event will raise money and
awareness for Sony Foundations major fundraising campaign -You Can to build specialised
youth cancer wards across the country.
A packed schedule of entertainment has been arranged for the afternoon, with performances from
leading Sony Music artists including three time ARIA nominee Kate Miller-Heidke, X Factor judge
Guy Sebastian, 2009 Australian Idol Stan Walker and 2010 Australias Got Talent winners Justice
Crew. Other noted guests attending the event include Ricky and Rianna Ponting, Geoff Huegill,
Eamon Sullivan, Natalie Gruzlewski, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Tim Ross, Ricki-Lee Coulter, Angela
Bishop, Melissa Doyle, Jessica Watson, Ian Thorpe, Peter Overton, Nikki Phillips, Danny Clayton,
Samantha Armytage, Emma Freedman and Dennis Lillee.
Sophie Ryan, Chief Executive Officer, Sony Foundation Australia, said Wharf4Ward will celebrate
the initial successes of our You Can campaign over $1 million has been raised in the past 12
months but there is still a long way to go. Wharf4Ward will be a day of fine food and world-class
entertainment at one of Sydneys premier dining destinations yet it will also raise much needed
funds and awareness for young Australians with cancer. Currently in Australia, 15 to 30 year olds
are the only generation for whom there has been no improvement in cancer survival outcomes for
25 years, making cancer the biggest disease killer of our youth. Sony Foundations You Can
campaign is raising funds to build specialised youth cancer wards which will help improve survival
rates for this forgotten generation.
Wharf4Ward will feature a Silent Auction with a host of highly coveted items going under the
hammer via an electronic bidding system. Items certain to start a bidding war include a luxury
escape to Whitsundays resort qualia, a Billabong Hawaiian surfing getaway and a chance to
experience the Qantas simulator. Equally desirable is the Woolloomooloo Wharf Gold Pass,
allowing six people to enjoy a three-course meal at each of the six acclaimed wharf restaurants
over the next 12 months. In addition, guests will also have the opportunity to purchase life-saving
equipment to furnish the initial six You Can Youth Cancer Wards to be built across the country.
Sony Foundations Wharf4Ward event will take place at Woolloomooloo Wharf from 12pm on
Thursday, 21 October 2010. Each of the Sony companies will host the event from one of the
restaurants situated on the wharf:
Sony Music: Otto Ristorante
Sony Australia: Manta
Sony Ericsson: Akis Indian
Sony Computer Entertainment: China Doll
Sony Pictures: Velero
Sony DADC: Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse
Guests will enjoy a sparkling Chandon reception when they arrive at the wharf and finish off their
day at the official Wild Turkey American Honey After Party at BLUE Hotels Water Bar.
The You Can campaign
With cancer the leading cause of disease-related death amongst Australias teenagers, there is an
obvious and urgent need for action. A unique collaboration between governments, not-for-profit
organisations, corporate and community support is helping to create a better future for young
Australians with cancer. Sony Foundation is proud to play its role in this life saving initiative, by
raising $15 million over three years in conjunction with long time charity partner CanTeen.
Its simple for the public to get involved without donating a single dollar. There are over 20 million
old mobile phones lying in bottom drawers across the country - the You Can campaign calls on all
Australians to recycle these. Sony Foundation has partnered with an international recycling
company to swap old mobile phones for cash. Funds raised will be used to build youth cancer
wards across Australia. All donated phones will be recycled for reuse. In the first five months of the
campaign over 200,000 phones have been donated to the campaign, equating to $1 million.
The You Can appeal is supported by Free Post mobile phone recycling envelopes inserted in
national newspapers and magazines. Unwanted mobile phones can also be donated at a variety of
retail partners Australia-wide including: Sony Centre, Harvey Norman, Best & Less, Retravision
and Leading Edge Computers. For more information on the You Can campaign visit
