The Age EG Music Awards 2009

Melbourne band the Temper Trap lead the nominations for this year’s Age EG Awards. The

band, who have also been nominated for four ARIA awards and whose single Sweet Disposition

cracked the UK top 10 last week, are up for four EG awards — Best Album, Best Song, Best

Group and Coopers Best Homegrown New Artist. Not far behind are Empire of the Sun, who

are up for three awards, while Little Birdy, Paul Dempsey, Sarah Blasko and Bertie Blackman

received multiple nominations.

from today to vote for your favourite music of the year. This year’s EG Awards are at the

Prince Bandroom, St Kilda, on November 20.

The gala event, which is open to the public, has become one of the most exciting dates on the

live music calendar. Hosted this year by Triple R’s Fee B Squared, the Awards presentation will

be followed by performances by the Painters and Dockers, the EG Allstars and special guests.

‘‘It’s been a great week,’’ says the Temper Trap guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto. ‘‘We’ve been out of

the market for most of the year so we thought that people might not care so it’s special to

come back and get these nominations.’’

EG editor Jo Roberts said she was hoping readers would push last year’s tally of 30,000 online

votes even higher this year, and show their support for Australia’s huge pool of local talent. “It

makes us especially proud to see artists we’ve supported go on to kick goals internationally,”

she says. “The EG Awards are one way readers can also show their love for our artists.”

The original line-up of the legendary Melbourne punk band, Painters and Dockers, will

reform for a one-off show at this year’s awards night. They will be inducted into the EG Hall of

Fame, joining an illustrious alumni that includes TISM, Kim Salmon and Died Pretty.

The EG Awards, now in their fourth year, are among the largest public-voted music awards in

the country. The Hall of Fame winner is presented with the ‘‘Waldo’’, named in honour of the

late, great Steve Waldon, a former Age journalist and EG editor. The trophies for the best local

music of 2009 are also presented at the event, along with performances from artists who in

the past have included Paul Kelly, The Living End, Died Pretty, Nic Cester, Kram, Stephen

Cummings, Joe Camilleri, Angie Hart and Bonnie Tyler.

This year, the Painters and Dockers will be joined at the EG Awards by high-octane Melbourne

rockers the Dacios and house band the EG Allstars, with guest singers Tex Perkins, Bertie

Blackman, Dan Sultan, Henry Wagons, The Wolfgramm Sisters and Jack Howard ’s horn

section. Tickets are $35 plus booking fee and available from today at

www.princebandroom.com.au, the Prince public bar and independent record stores. Profits

go to Support Act Limited, a charity that helps ailing musicians.
