“Stopp Press” Release: Monday 20th October, 2008

A TREBLE OF TROPHIES FOR PETER LEHMANN’S RIESLING IN CANBERRA!

The Peter Lehmann 2003 ‘Wigan’ Eden Valley Riesling was named the ‘Best Riesling from

Australia & NZ’ at the 2008 Canberra International Riesling Challenge last Friday evening,

winning three trophies in the process, and also had two Rieslings named in the Top 10

Australian wines of the Challenge.

Formerly known as Peter Lehmann’s Reserve Riesling, the wine was named the ‘Wigan’

honouring the incredible contribution of PLW’s Chief Winemaker, Andrew Wigan.

The 2003 vintage won the following three trophies:

Hyatt Hotel Canberra and Qantas Airlines Trophy

‘Best Riesling from Australia & NZ’

Jim Murphy’s Market Cellars Trophy

‘Best Riesling from Australia’

Actew AGL Trophy

‘Best Museum Class Riesling’

It was an outstanding show for Peter Lehmann Wines, as their multi-award winning 2002

Reserve Riesling also won a gold medal in the Museum Class, F7, for wines 2005 and prior.

The concept of the Canberra Riesling Challenge was developed in 1999 by Ken Helm, a

pioneer Canberra winemaker, and since the inaugural event in 2000, where there were 137

entries from 81 wineries across Australia, the 2008, and 9th Challenge, has eclipsed all

previous records with 512 entries from six countries around the world.

Ian Hongell, Senior Winemaker at Peter Lehmann Wines, was on hand to receive the awards

and said, “With the continued success of our Riesling labels on both the national and

international stages over the past few years, this is yet another wonderful endorsement to the

quality of fruit being produced by our growers from Eden Valley in South Australia. All our

winemaking team are truly thrilled to have won these awards, and particularly when

following on from our earlier success having won the Actew AGL Award for Best Museum

Riesling with our 2001 Reserve Riesling back in 2005.”

The 2003 ‘Wigan’ Riesling is a current release and is available in selected fine wine retail

shops around the nation or from the winery Cellar Door.

Suggested Retail Price:   $40.00 per bottle.

Winemakers: Andrew Wigan, Ian Hongell, Kerry Morrison and Phil Lehmann
