SA The Big Winner In Top 100 Gourmet List

South Australia is well over-represented in the 100 Greatest Australian Gourmet Experiences, published by Australian Traveller Magazine today.

According to a panel of food experts, foodies simply cannot go wrong in South Australia. Throw a dart at the map and you can't miss one of the nation's greatest gourmet experiences.

The top SA Gourmet Experience was Appellation restaurant a The Louise hotel in the Barossa. The Barossa region was a clear winner with the 100 Greatest Australian Gourmet Experiences panellists, who selected four of the valley's experiences in the Top 100.

Maggie Beer's Farm Shop, Linke's Meats and the Barossa Farmers Markets were the other Barossa entries. The magazine described Maggie Beer's Farm Shop as "one of the great cathedrals of Australian food."

The world-renowned Coffin Bay oysters, local favourites Haigh's Chocolates, Adelaide Central markets and the McLaren Vale Cellar Door also featured on the hotly contested list.

Two Flinders Rangers experiences made the list: Arkaba Station's outback dining and the Feral Grill at the Prairie Hotel in Parachilna.

Australian Traveller editor Greg Barton says: "SA shines for sheer diversity. There aren't any food regions, as such, because the whole state is a veritable feast. Cheese, wine, bread, chocolate, meat; you name it, it's on show in SA."

Methodology
A panel of food experts including Matt Moran, Jacques Reymond, Maggie Beer, Simon Johnson, Matthew Evans, Alla Wolf-Tasker and Michael Ryan decided the Top 100 Gourmet Experiences. The panellists were presented with a shortlist of 300 experiences and asked: "On a scale of 1-10, how strongly would you like to experience the nomination and/or would you advise a friend to experience it?" The answers were tabulated and the Top 100 Gourmet Experiences revealed.
