Vegetarian advocacy group Vegetarian Network Victoria has begun taking votes for its 2009 Restaurant of the Year Award.

The annual award celebrates the diverse array of vegetarian restaurants in Victoria.

VNV President Mark Doneddu said, "This award highlights that fact that Melbourne has so many wonderful vegetarian restaurants, more than most of the other major cities in the world, most of which have far bigger populations than Melbourne.

"Melbourne multicultural influence provides a great diversity of vegetarian cuisine ranging from Chinese, to Indian and to Italian food that is a million miles away from the concept of 'rabbit food'."

Restaurant-goers can go online and vote for their favourite vegetarian restaurant at www.vnv.org.au.

This year's competition has seen the addition of Le Cru - a vegan raw food restaurant located in Albert Park.

"This increase in restaurants signifies a growing awareness in Melbourne of the benefits of plant based diet, from an environmental, ethical and health point of view", said Mr Doneddu.

Previous winners include Enlightened Cuisine, Vegie Hut, Bowl of Soul, and Lord of the Fries - who took out the coveted prize last year.

Voters will also be in the running to win a hamper of vegan products as well as a dinner for two at the winning restaurant. Voting closes December 15, 2009 and the winner will be announced in January.
