Western Australia Makes Its Mark On Australia's Culinary Map

Three iconic Western Australians have made it onto the 100 Greatest Australian Gourmet Experiences list, published today by Australian Traveller Magazine.

Margaret River has secured its foodie Mecca status once and for all with Margaret River Providore and Cullen Wines Restaurant both making it into the list.

The magazine described the Margaret River Providore as "an irresistible combination of cellar door, pantry, organic caf, orchard and olive grove."

The Cullen restaurant, also in Margaret River, was given a glowing review: "It doesn't get more authentic, relaxed and unpretentious than Margaret River's Cullen Restaurant, a dining experience that is wholly in sync with its region."

In Perth, David Coomer's Asian-inspired menu at Star Anise waves the flag for the state's capital.

Australian Traveller editor Greg Barton says: "Western Australia is really starting to forge ahead in the food stakes. Margaret River has been producing excellent wine for decades, but now the providores and restaurateurs are really giving them a run for their money in terms of tourist dollars."

Methodology
A panel of food experts including Matt Moran, Jacques Reymond, Maggie Beer, Simon Johnson, Matthew Evans, Alla Wolf-Tasker and Michael Ryan decided the Top 100 Gourmet Experiences. The panellists were presented with a shortlist of 300 experiences and asked: "On a scale of 1-10, how strongly would you like to experience the nomination and/or would you advise a friend to experience it?" The answers were tabulated and the Top 100 Gourmet Experiences revealed.

Editor Greg Barton is available for interview. The complete 100 experiences
list is available at www.australiantraveller.com (From March 24th 2010)
