SEMINAR ON PRESENT AND FUTURE OF INDIGENOUS ARTS COMES TO NAIDOC WEEK
Western Sydney artists, cultural workers, writers, musicians, filmmakers and digital media practitioners have been
enjoying an exciting range of current and highly informative arts seminars providing inspiration and creating a
practical basis for many artists of all forms to kick start their careers.
The seminars have been part of an all year round program of professional development organized by the
Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE), a Western Sydney based arts organization, with a host of partner
organisations ranging from Councils, performance spaces and arts centres. The seminars are free and held in the
evenings at different venues all over Western Sydney every month until December this year.
The fifth and next seminar of the year, Indigenous Arts – present and future will be held in partnership with
Bankstown City Council as part of NAIDOC Week on Thursday, 10 July from 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm at the
Bankstown City Council, Council Chambers (the Roundhouse), Cnr Chapel Rd and Appian Way,
Bankstown. The seminar will focus on a diversity of topics related to Indigenous Arts in Australia including
community engagement in exploring cultural heritage and contemporary stories eg through the development of
public art in Bankstown's Georges River Project as an example, what financial and other opportunities are
currently available for Indigenous Arts in Australia, what intellectual property and other legal rights exist for
Indigenous Artists and organizations and where is the future of Indigenous Arts heading.
Speakers include prominent Indigenous Australians including Garry Jones - Lecturer in Aboriginal Studies and
Creative Arts, Woolyungah Indigenous Centre, University of Wollongong, Peter White - Indigenous Cultural
Development Officer, Arts NSW, Patricia Adjei - Indigenous Solicitor, Artists in the Black, Arts Law Centre of
Australia and a performance and presentation by Adam Hill – nationally and internationally recognized Koori Artist
and performer.
This seminar will be followed by the next five seminars for the year as part of the Spring / Summer Seminar
Series for 2008 running from August – December. These are very popular forums that book out quickly. It is
