Latest Indigenous data, new survey results out on Friday: ABS
What: An ABS spokesperson will be available for media interviews on the release of the
third National Social Survey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to be
published at 11.30am Friday, 30 October 2009.
The release will focus on how Indigenous people are faring across a range of areas of
social concern and will cover changes since 2002, including comparisons with non-
Indigenous people. The survey features results for both Indigenous adults and children.
Topics to be covered include
Educational outcomes including the completion of Year 12 and non-school
qualifications.
Work outcomes including new employment and unemployment results.
Health including smoking rates and self-assessed health. Childrens health data
features measures of physical activity and aspects of maternal health including
breastfeeding rates.
Language and culture including the latest data on Indigenous languages and
aspects of childrens cultural learning and time spent with Indigenous elders.
Social outcomes and involvement including the availability of support in times of
crisis and whether people are able to have a say within their community.
Housing outcomes including latest data on home ownership and issues such as
overcrowding.
Financial stress including difficulties paying for everyday expenses.
