Celebrating nine years of the Siemens-RMIT Fine Art Awards
An exciting exhibition showcasing the best of RMIT University postgraduate and
undergraduate fine art students has opened at RMIT Gallery.
Now in their 9th year, the $32,000 Siemens-RMIT Fine Art Scholarship Awards are
an example of how business and art provides exciting opportunities for the
practitioners of tomorrow.
Chosen from more than 200 entries from the RMIT School of Art, the diverse
selection covers ceramics, drawing, fine art, photography, gold and silversmithing,
media arts, painting, printmaking and sculpture. The 43 finalists works will be on
display at RMIT Gallery until 23 January.
RMIT School of Art Associate Professor Peter Ellis said the support from Siemens
over the past nine years had allowed at least 50 students to experience
international travel and further their artistic careers.
RMIT University prides itself on giving students a global passport and these
awards to just that. Part of the educative practice for a young artist is to see first-
hand the great works of art and art of other cultures, he said.
The Siemens-RMIT Fine Art Scholarship Awards is one of the most progressive
scholarships of its kind in Australia, enabling eight RMIT students each year to
further their careers in the field of fine arts by assisting their research and
production costs.
It is one of the longest arts-business partnerships in Australia and demonstrates
the commitment of both Siemens and RMIT to innovation, knowledge and
excellence.
Each year a panel of judges select eight students who receive a combined $32,000
in financial scholarships to further their careers and studies: five undergraduate
scholarships and three postgraduate scholarships.
In addition, one further artwork will be picked by a group of Siemens employees to
receive the $1,000 Siemens Fine Art Acquisition Award.
The winning work becomes part of the Siemens Australia and New Zealand
corporate art collection, to be displayed in the Siemens offices at Bayswater.
Winners will be announced by RMIT Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daine
Alcorn, at a special presentation at RMIT Gallery on 20 January from 6pm to 8pm.
