Expert comment on a decade in the visual arts –

RMIT Gallery Director and Chief Curator, Suzanne Davies, reflects on the key

trends of the past decade in the visual arts:

Artists have been at the forefront of exploring social and environmental

issues such as climate change, species loss and refugees.

The power of private collectors and the market place has overwhelmed the

content and quality of the visual arts.

The merging of art and design.

The market discovers Asian art.

Artists embrace the digital, nano and bio world for inspiration and tools.

The backlash against new media is a resurgence in the value of the

handmade.

Widespread outrage over artist Bill Henson’s 2008 exhibition, featuring

photographs of a nude 13-year old girl, highlights community concerns

about the sexualisation of children in art, commerce and the media.

Suzanne Davies is the Director and chief curator of RMIT Gallery, one of

Melbourne's most vibrant public galleries with a strong international and Australian

exhibition program exploring contemporary fine art, design, architecture and new

media.

She also sits on the board of the Australia-India Council.

Ms Davies is available for interview.
