FIVE SHILLING HARBOUR BRIDGE STAMP VOTED A PUBLIC FAVOURITE
Few organisations understand the mood of the nation better than Australia Post and its predecessor. Since its
creation 200 years ago, it has issued an enormous variety of stamps that reflect the life and times of Australia;
be it times of courage, conflict, achievement or mourning.
It invited the public to vote for its favourite Australian stamp from a choice of 150 that represent our culture,
heritage, major events and significant achievements since stamps were issued by New South Wales in 1850.
The stamp voted second in the poll is the 1932 five shilling Opening of Sydney Harbour Bridge. A number
of these remarkable and special stamps are being offered by Melbourne-based auctioneer, Leski Auctions.
The stamp is affectionately known as the Five Bob Bridge. The design is free of embellishment, a technique
used by
the artist to emphasise the size of the bridge, which is reinforced by the tiny image of the R.M.S.
Orford, a passenger liner that regularly plied the Australia-England run, steaming under it.
The results: (1) £2 Kangaroo and Map (1913-38); (2) 5s Opening of Sydney Harbour Bridge (1932); (3)
2½d Peace and Victory (1946); (4) 8½d Gwoya Jungarai, "One Pound Jimmy" (1950); (5) 6d Kookaburra
(1914).
These stamps are a favourite among collectors for their value and links to our past, says Charles Leski.
Lot 192 will be offered for sale by Leski Auctions in Melbourne on Wednesday, October 28th at 5.00pm. It
has
a pre-sale estimate of $1,500
-
$1,750. (NB: Image available
