Focus on student and alumni art at Open Day

As part of the program of art exhibitions organised by the School of Art at RMIT

this year, two exhibitions – ‘Magnetic Traces’ and ‘Crème’ – will feature RMIT

student and alumni art during Open Day on Sunday 9 August.

Magnetic Traces is an auditory exhibition at RMIT’s Project Space / Spare Room

a listening program that highlights a diverse range of environmental sound

practices from Australia and France.

Both Australia and France are leaders within contemporary musical discourse

advocating an exciting range of auditory experiences that critically and

aesthetically engages the listener.

The exhibition includes six RMIT alumni:  Anthea Caddy, Thembi Soddell, Camilla

Hannan, Eamon Sprod, Marcia Jane and Geoff Robinson. The exhibition includes

sound works that draw on field recording, bioacoustics, acoustic ecology,

improvisation, electro-acoustic composition and surround sound spatialisation.

Crème is a selection of work from five RMIT undergraduates enrolled in the School

of Art painting and media-arts program.

Comprising of moving image and installation, painting students Raphael

Buttonshaw, Karri Cameron, Jade Plitz, and media-artist Gerard Russo explore the

spatial relations between objects, while media-artist Tanya Ungeri explores the

obsession with the pop star phenomenon with her hypnotic video Thrillah

comprising of appropriated video footage, amateur performance and dynamic

rapid-cut video editing techniques of Michael Jackson’s 1982 music video Thriller.

Crème is curated by Stephen Gallagher and will be on show at the RMIT School of

Art Gallery, RMIT City campus.
