Queensland Design Receives Top Accolades at qdos Awards

MEDIA RELEASE

Monday 5 October 2009

The overall winners for the Queensland Design on Show (qdos) Awards were unleashed at a Cocktail Event at the QUT Theatre Foyer, Gardens Point Campus in Brisbane on Friday night.

The 'Environmesh' by Infinity Design Development received the top design Award of Excellence Honours and a Gold Award in the Three Dimension Industrial Design category. Environmesh eliminates concrete cancer and is a clever application of mature technology for a traditional industry.

Qdos judge, Mike Simonian said the product is beautiful in its functional simplicity. "Its functionality is something only an installer and structural engineer can account for but the overall appearance, for example colour, makes it feel like a product that can be trusted, is cost effective and simply works," Mike said.

Australian designer, Jason Bird from Luxxbox received four awards on the night in the Three Dimensional category. Jason picked up two Gold Awards, one for Furniture Design for his Brainwash Collection, an espresso culture caf series of stools, tables and benches. The other Gold he received was in the Luminare Design category for Phase.

Jason also received two Silver Awards in the Furniture Design Category for Tingle and his Radii Collection. Tingle is a series of interior or exterior low seating and table collection incorporating a range of mix and match colours.

The stand-out contender for the night was Arkhefield who picked up seven awards in the Interior Design category, including three Gold Awards. Arkhefield received Gold Awards in the New Residential Design category for Elysium Lot 153, Best Use of Lighting category for 82 Eagle Street and Public Institutional Interior Design category for the UQ Rural Clinical School.

The Elysium development can be seen as a defining moment for residential architecture in South East Queensland. It creates memorable spaces through synthesising coastal living with regionally inspired sub-tropical modernism.

Arkhefield's three silver awards included Libertine and Coffee and Chocolate, both for Hospitality Design, One Macquarie for New Residential Design and Balmoral House for Refurbished Residential Design.

Among the designers receiving awards were Cottee Parker for their Public/Institutional Interior Design for Virgin Blue's Check in Lounge, Bigfish.tv for the Corporate Identity/Branding for Love and Rockets and Studio 13's designers from West End company; Street and Garden Furniture Company were awarded a silver award.

These along with the work of all other winners and finalists are on display in a public exhibition at QUT Art Museum, Gardens Point Campus until 25 October.

Presented by the Design Institute of Australia (Queensland Branch), the qdos Awards is now in its eighth year and it is the only program of its kind recognising design across a range of disciplines.
