Rare 1930 Melbourne Cup memorabilia uncovered on cafe wall
Melbourne Cup tips written on the wall in 1930 (when Phar Lap won) were recently
discovered on the wall of one of Melbournes busiest cafes Three Bags Full, in Abbotsford
The cafe is in a heritage bluestone, former woollen hat factory on Nicholson and Mollison
Street. When the renovations were being undertaken, the cafe owners decided to leave
the tips on the wall, but covered it up with a painting. When the painting was removed
yesterday, a customer noticed the 1930 Cup tips and relayed the significance of this rare
piece of memorabilia.
Diamond Rozakeas, Three Bags Full part owner, was keen to maintain the integrity of the
building when they renovated earlier this year.
There are so many features from the original factory that we were keen to preserve, and
which give the cafe so much character. We named the cafe after the bags of wool which
would have been scattered around during the booming hat factory, she said.
A former apprentice, Des Luckman (now 75,) was an apprentice at the hat factory and
remembersseeing the tips, as a fourteen year old.
Coincidentally, Dess company, Luckman Catering, supplies Three Bags Full cafe.
