Shelter: On Kindness free public talk
Artists, architects and participants from the critically acclaimed RMIT Gallery
exhibition Shelter: On Kindness part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival
will give a free public talk this week at Federation Square.
Presented by RMIT Gallery and supported by Federation Square, the public talk
will be held at BMW Edge on Wednesday, 21 October, from 12.30pm to 2pm.
Speakers will share their thoughts on the concept of shelter and the response to
RMIT Gallery Director Suzanne Davies brief to interpret shelter through a
kindness filter.
From Gregory Burgess luminous 400 blocks of beeswax to March Studios 20
tonnes of ordinary builders hardwood stacked into a towering cube, Shelter: On
Kindness forces us to think about how and where we live.
Gallery visitors have delighted in Charles Andersons evocative narrative of an
illuminated ceiling, puzzled at the sinister labyrinth of Safe-House by LAB
Architecture Studios and been transported by Robert Bridgewaters black clouds
and ray of divine light in wood.
Photos of cattlemens huts tap into the national psyche and remind us of hope and
shelter in a harsh world.
The speakers will discuss being part of this vast and complex exhibition and
explain how they came up with their vastly different artistic responses.
Speakers include: RMIT lecturer and artist Charles Anderson, sculptor Robert
Bridgewater, cattlemens huts expert and writer Jane Holth and architects Peter
Davidson, Gregory Burgess and Rodney Eggleston.
The moderator will be Suzanne Davies, RMIT Gallery Director and Chief Curator.
