World Cup & Largest International Fine Art Collaboration In History

Leading contemporary Australian artist Chris Wake is one of the 160 international

painters, representing 32 different nations, chosen to participate in the 2010

International Fine Art Collection.

The diverse pieces in the Collection celebrate the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World

Cup, the world’s most-watched sporting event, in South Africa

this year and

have been recognised as Official Licensed Products of the tournament.

According to 2010 Fine Art,

the South African company behind the project, “ It is

one of the largest and most ambitious international art collaborations in history.”

Chris Wake, from Adelaide Hills, has finished her painting titled “Cockatoo At The

Great Debate” which has now been approved by FIFA as part of the Collection.

The painting includes a strange raft of characters from different countries with

Nolanesque eyes debating the football match. Wake says “The brief was to

incorporate Australia`s national pride, African heritage and the enthusiasm of

football – not an easy task to include all of this in one painting”. She added “I like

to include animals in my paintings, usually birds, to remind us that we belong to

the natural world and that mankind needs to live a life that is far more respectful

and sensitive to other flora and fauna species.”

In less than 70 days South Africa will host the 2010 FIFA World Cup  – the first

time ever that the event will be held on African soil. “In the eighty years of the

FIFA World CupTM

fine art has never before been licensed on this scale,” said

Rob Spaull, General Manager of 2010 Fine Art.  “Artists from each of the 32

countries that have qualified for the tournament in South Africa have been invited

to participate in this ground-breaking global exhibition,” says Spaull, “The

concept is to use the creativity of some of the world’s best fine art talents to

celebrate the return of the world to Africa for this event.”  All of the original works

in the Collection are to be auctioned off in South Africa during the tournament

and a limited number of 210 signed fine art prints of each work are also being

made available for purchase by the public in galleries and exhibitions around the

world.

Australian artist Chris Wake was commissioned by 2010 Fine Art because her

work had already achieved global recognition.  She had a sell-out exhibition in

Melbourne a few years ago and was a finalist in the 2008 Sovereign Asian Art

Prize held in Hong Kong .  This prestigious art prize, for which artists have to be

nominated by a respected art dealer, covers the whole of Asia,

and Wake was

one of 30 finalists out of 1100 nominated

artists.  Eminent judges came from

around the world

and included

curators from the Guggenheim and The Tate

museums.

Born in 1960 Wake has had more than 12 solo exhibitions and 40 group

exhibitions some of which have been sell out shows.

Chris Wake studied Fine

Art at Adelaide Central School of Art and has been painting since 1976.
