A decade in social media

Expert available for comment –

RMIT University academic John Lenarcic nominates some of the key trends in

social media over the past decade:

Social networking (Facebook, MySpace and Twitter)

Friendship became virtual and ever so complicated in its management.

File sharing

The beginning of the decade saw the demise of Napster but illegal file sharing went

from strength to strength via other means.

The iPod and iTunes

A

revolution in how we listen to music and how we buy it. We may look back on the

Noughties as the beginning of the end of the album.

The iPhone fetish

A

phone and computer melded into one stylish gadget. The stuff of science fiction,

available today.

The Singularity

Computer scientist Ray Kurzweil concocts the notion that in less than 30 years we

will all be able to upload our selves into immortality via the Singularity.

Mr Lenarcic researches on social and ethical aspects of the internet, computers,

online networking sites and new technologies.

A lecturer in the School of Business and Information Technology, he is available for

interview.
