Groundbreaking Indigenous children's television show to screen on ABC3

Australia's first Indigenous children's television game show, Letterbox, will broadcast to all school age children on ABC TVs new free-to-air kids channel ABC3.

The ABC's international television service, Australia Network, will also broadcast the show internationally to more than 44 countries across Asia, the Pacific and Indian subcontinent giving international children a taste of Australia's Indigenous culture.

Letterbox, created by wholly Aboriginal owned and Brisbane based Carbon Media, is a multi-platform children's game show featuring Indigenous contestants and Indigenous language segments. Letterbox was originally commissioned by National Indigenous Television (NITV).

The game show stars Indigenous children from remote areas, such as Cherbourg and Murgon, who compete in a series of English spelling, memory and grammatical games. Each episode also includes a segment called Winanga-li, which focuses on Indigenous languages and culture from around Australia.

Carbon Media managing director Wayne Denning says the deals are an important milestone for Indigenous television.

"Any child can have fun playing Letterbox, but for the game show we chose to showcase young Indigenous children who rarely have the opportunity to prove they are positive role models," Mr Denning says.

"Now the faces of Indigenous children will appear across Australia on ABC3 and across the world, which is a great achievement."

Letterbox is currently being broadcast twice daily on NITV. Letterbox can also be played online in the classroom, or at home, on a computer or mobile phone. Go to www.playletterbox.com
