Winner of the 2010 L'Erudito Scholarship Announced
Galli Estate Winery is pleased to announce Jeannette Clarke has been awarded the L'Erudito 2010: The Lorenzo Galli Scholarship.
Jeannette - the wine buyer and manager at inner-city Melbourne bar La Vita Buona 'The Good Life' was successful in achieving the award over 11 other finalists. She receives a fully paid trip to Italy valued at $10,000 for her efforts.
Funded by Galli Estate Winery, L'Erudito is an initiative to help educate the next generation about Italian-style wines. The program consists of a written component and a two-day masterclass lead by: eminent Italian wine expert Michael Trembath, wine writer Jane Faulkner and The Wine Guide's Dan Sims with support from leading wine identities such as: winemakers Fred and Joel Pizzini and wine writer Max Allen.
The L'Erudito program is open to anyone working in hospitality or wine retail who is a permanent Australian resident, the 12 finalists for this year's award were selected from hundreds of applications. Announced in October 2009 this year's finalists were: Gabrielle Poy, City Wine Shop; Jeannette Clarke, La Vita Buona; Georgia Roberts, Bibendum; Penny Grant, Taxi Dining Room; Christie Gurner (all from Victoria); Mauro Bortolato, Glass Brasserie Hilton; Michael Davey, Australian Wine Selectors (NSW); Joshua Cooper, Hewitston Winery; Luke Steel, Jim Barry Wines (SA) and Sophie Houghton, Hawley Vineyards (Tas).
This is the second year of the L'Erudito scholarship. Sally Humble, Sommelier at Cutler & Co won the award in 2009.
Established by Galli Estate owner Pamela Galli, the Award is in honour of her husband, Lorenzo Galli of the Galli Estate winery. Born in Tuscany, Lorenzo's family had made wine in Italy for generations, before he came to Australia in the 1950s.
