Ready…steady…it’s a great Greek cook-off to launch Paniyiri 2008!

Well known Greek chef, Manuel Patunas will join with fellow culinary creators Danny Yeo

and Danny Lu to launch the Paniyiri Greek Festival’s Food Program this morning (Monday

April 28) at 10.30am at The Greek Club in South Brisbane.  They will be joined by

traditionally costumed performers.

The Paniyiri Greek Festival, Queensland’s signature celebration of all things Greek and the largest two-day ethnic festival in

Australia, will be held over the weekend of May 17 and 18 this year.

While the historic steps of the Acropolis may be some 15,000km from Brisbane, all the sights, sounds, characters and culture

from the country which produced haloumi and honey puffs, Homer, Socrates and  Plato and the famous Zorba are celebrated

in style during the much anticipated festival.

Food is a favourite of Paniyiri and this year more than 30 food stalls in Musgrave Park will showcase the tastes, recipes and

secrets of food from all regions of Greece… Baklava, Honey Puffs and Kataifi are a must for the sweet tooths, or Souvlaki,

Spanakopita, Haloumi, Dolmades or Kefteds for those with a spicy preference.

In The Greek Club, chef-led Cooking Demonstrations will headline the Great Greek Gastronomy program featuring a

Ready… Steady… Cook showcase starring Patunas, Yeo and Lu in a culinary cultural-fusion cook off, as well as

demonstrations on how to entertain Greek style, how to create traditional Greek cuisine, preparing Greek style ice cream, how

to make traditional Greek sweets and more.

Over the Paniyiri weekend Festival goers are expected to consume some 100,000 Honey Puffs, 100,000+ Souvlakia, almost

10,000 Dolmades, 18,000 coffees, 500 kilograms of fried Haloumi cheese, 10,000 Shiftalies (Greek Cypriot sausage), 1000

kilograms of calamari and another 1000 kilograms of baby octopus!

Australia’s very own Greek Goddess and Logie Award winning actress Effie

will headline the program this year. The Main

Stage in Musgrave Park will host almost 20 hours of entertainment over the weekend, including a new dance element, So you

think you can Zorba as well as Grape Stomping, Olive and Honeypuff Eating Competitions, Hellenic Dancing, the famous

HaBibis from Melbourne and much more.

Now into its 32nd successful year, Paniyiri is a community initiative of the 25,000-strong Greek community of South East

Queensland. Funds raised by the Paniyiri Greek Festival are channeled back into the community via the Greek Orthodox

Community of St George, Brisbane’s oldest Greek community established in Queensland in the 1920s.
