Record Number of Comments for Organic Standard
“Over 900 comments were received on the draft of the Australian Standard for Organic and Biodynamic
Products. Previously 60 comments were considered a high number for a draft standard.” stated Andre Leu,
Chair of the Organic Federation of Australia.
"This unprecedented level of support shows that the Australian organic sector wants to ensure that this
standard meets the needs of our complex industry as well as the expectations of our consumers" Andre
stated.
“The OFA and other industry organisations received submissions from the whole spectrum of the organic
sector from producers, processors, retailers, consumers and certifiers.” Tim Marshall, Chair of the OFA
Standards Committee said.
"As the peak industry body for the Australian organic and biodynamic sector, the Organic Federation of
Australia (OFA) has spent three years working in partnership with the government and the Australian organic
and biodynamic sector on this project," Eric Love, Deputy Chair stated.
"An Australian Standard will provide the organic industry with a uniform national benchmark for the
production and the marketing of organic produce on the domestic market. Once developed, this standard
can be used by government agencies such as the ACCC to ensure compliance against misleading and
deceptive practices for organic products sold on the domestic market including imported products," Mr Leu
said.
