The Best Sauvignon Blanc in Australia

Is the 2008 Wangolina Station Mount Benson Sauvignon Blanc the best ‘savvy’ in Australia?

The wine critics seem to think so.

The wine has just been adjudged the ‘knock-out’ wine in a class of Sav Blanc’s and blends from around

Australia in the Adelaide Advertiser’s annual Top 100.

Three weeks ago the wine was awarded a Blue Gold Medal and included in the Top 100 at the

glamorous Sydney International Wine Competition – the first Australian Sauvignon Blanc to receive

this accolade in five years.

Earlier in October it was included in the Adelaide Review’s 2008 Hot 100 – ‘the definitive collection of

South Australia’s most exciting wines’.

In September it received a Gold Medal at the prestigious Adelaide Wine Show, one of only 140 wines

to receive a gold medal out of more than 2600 entries.

Consumers in the ‘red-hot’ Sauvignon Blanc category also seem to agree, with the wine flying out the

door at leading bottle shops and restaurants around the country.

Managing demand on the back of so many accolades can be a challenge for the humble boutique

winemaker.

“Traditionally our biggest customers are the summer holiday makers at the local restaurants and cafés in

Robe and Kingston”, says Winemaker and General Manager Anita Goode.

“This year we will be fighting to hang on to stock for our local supporters. Limestone Coast seafood is

fantastic, but if there is no decent Sauv-Blanc to wash it down with it won’t be pretty!” says Anita.

Wangolina Station are proud supporters of the vibrant local tourism scene and have spent nine years

developing their vineyards at Mount Benson, halfway between Kingston and Robe on the picturesque

Limestone Coast.

“I guess you could say we have spent nine years becoming an overnight success!” says Anita. “Mount

Benson is a great place to grow grapes and it is great to see the wines doing so well out in the market-

place.”
