ABORIGINAL KIDS EMBRACE ROAD SAFETY
Children in the Ballina and Wardell Aboriginal communities have taken part in a Bicycle
Helmet Project as a part of an Aboriginal road safety campaign.
The RTAs Bring the Mob Home Safely campaign addresses road safety issues such as
drink driving, wearing of seat belts, overcrowding of vehicles, speeding, and pedestrian
and bicycle safety.
An RTA spokesperson said the Bicycle Helmet Project included a bicycle safety
awareness day and a bicycle helmet artwork design competition.
The competition invited students from Cabbage Tree Island Public School, Wardell
Public School, and St Francis Xavier Primary School to create a design on a blank
helmet.
A local elder judged the competition and the winner was a student from Cabbage Tree
Island Public School.
The winning student was presented with a new bike, helmet and certificate.
Bicycle helmets displaying the winning design were given to all the students of the three
schools, the spokesperson said.
To conclude, all participants in the competition were invited to attend a refresher of the
bicycle safety awareness day.
