Remembering Mabo: Concert celebrates a historic day
The 17th anniversary of the High Courts historic decision on native title will be
celebrated next week, with musicians, dancers and speakers gathering at RMIT
University for the annual Mabo Day Concert.
The free concert will feature amazing performances from Torres Strait Islander
acts, including a youth dance group who are travelling to Melbourne all the way
from Murray Island birthplace and home of Eddie Mabo.
The Mabo Day Concert is presented by RMITs Ngarara Willim Indigenous Centre,
in partnership with the City of Melbourne, on Wednesday, 3 June, at Kaleide
Theatre.
Renowned musicians performing on stage will include the Liz Cavanagh Band, the
Maza Sisters and Drew Namok.
They will be joined by Murray Island youth dance group, Eip Karem Beizam, and
guest speaker, Don Banu, from the Torres Strait Regional Authority.
Information booths and short films about the historical importance of the High Court
decision on 3 June, 1992 which overturned the doctrine of terra nullius will also
be part of the celebrations.
