Advancing Quality Medicines the Focus of Joint Meeting of Chinese and U.S. Standards Groups
ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --
Protecting Public Health a Shared International Goal
Supporting greater access to quality medicines for people around the world, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia
Commission (ChP) and the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) will host the 4th ChP-USP Joint
Science & Standards Symposium in Hangzhou, China, on October 21-22. At least six hundred people from
Chinese provincial food and drug administration agencies, drug control laboratories, and manufacturers are
expected to attend. Topics to be addressed at the Symposium include: the framework for USP-ChP cooperation;
the regulation and registration of Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) and biologics in China; safety evaluation
and quality control of TCMs; and documentary standards approaches for biologics and the current status of follow-
on biologics.
According to Roger L. Williams, M.D., USP's chief executive officer, "As USP and ChP continue to work together
in the interest of global public health, an ongoing exchange on scientific and regulatory progress affecting quality
standards for pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements and related ingredients must be central to our efforts."
ChP and USP have actively engaged in joint efforts in recent years. A series of memoranda of understanding
(MOUs) identified scientific exchange as a key component of furthering working relationships between the two
groups, and this joint USP-ChP meeting is one. The Symposium presents a broad range of scientific perspectives
on quality standards. In addition to USP and ChP representatives, presenters will include participants from the
British Pharmacopoeia Commission, the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia Committee, the National Regulatory Authority of
Cuba, the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare, the European Pharmacopoeia
Commission, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Indonesia),
and the Federal Service on Surveillance in Healthcare and Social Development of the Russian Federation-
ROSZDRAVNADZOR.
