MEDIA RELEASE

Ambassador of Afghanistan attends Charity High Tea to launch book

by author and humanitarian Kay Danes

In a book to be launched today at a Charity High Tea on the Gold Coast, his Excellency

Dr Amanullah Jayhoon, Ambassador for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Australia

recognises the bravery and contribution of local Brisbane author and humanitarian Kay

Danes, who is the Australian Liaison for the Childlight Foundation for Afghan Children

and Ambassador for the Peace for the Children.

Beneath the Pale Blue Burqa: One Woman’s Journey through Taliban Strongholds

is Kay’s incredible story of travelling the ancient silk route in a dusty Toyota mini-van

amidst kidnappings, suicide bombings, carnage and chaos, to deliver life changing

opportunities and aid to people devastated by war.

“Afghanistan, despite being dangerous is, as Kay says, an amazing place. Very few

people get an opportunity to do what she did. She took to the roads, walked the streets,

visited schools and prisons. She did not use the painful and tragic existence of the

Afghan women as snapshot photography of a passerby. You will see my country through

the eyes of one foreign woman who now has the dust of Afghanistan in her veins,” says

Dr Jayhoon.

Today’s Charity High Tea and book launch will aid Peace for the Children. Master of

Ceremonies Tania Zaetta will be joined by entertainers and guests Normie Rowe,

Australian Idol contestant Sabrina Mitwali, Bessie Bardot and Geoff Barker, Private

Damien Thomlinson Commando Regiment soldier and Keysar Trad, spokesperson for

the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia.

“The western media tend to give a snapshot of Afghanistan that focuses only on one

aspect, the war. I want to show people the other side, the progress being made. I’ve

seen exactly what's been achieved as a result of stabilisation in certain areas. We have

thousands of children in schools getting educated, young men and women in university

and medical clinics getting funded,” says Ms Danes.

Book titled: Beneath the Pale Blue Burqa: One Woman’s Journey through Taliban

Strongholds by Kay Danes, Big Sky Publishing, $34.99. www.bigskypublishing.com.au.

Event at 3.30pm at Jupiter’s Gold Coast on Tuesday 26 October

Kay Danes is available for interview.
