Expert comment on Bali anniversary
Survivors of the first Bali bombing will mark the eighth anniversary today with a
ceremony at the scene of the attacks in Kuta.
Debate over the future of the site of the Sari Club continues, with a small group of
survivors campaigning for the establishment of a peace park.
Eight years on, how have the attacks changed local communities in Bali?
What is the local reaction to proposals for a peace park in Kuta?
How is the peace park site and the existing memorial being used and viewed by
local communities and tourists?
RMIT Universitys Associate Professor Jeff Lewis is an expert on Bali and
Indonesia.
His in-depth examination of the impact of the Bali bombings on local communities
led to the publication of Bali's Silent Crisis: Desire, Tragedy and Transition
(Rowman & Littlefield, 2009), with co-author Dr Belinda Lewis.
As part of his ongoing work, Associate Professor Lewis regularly meets key
leaders in Bali and travels to remote communities in Indonesia, including West
Timor.
His research includes investigations of Australian-Indonesian relations, the ways
Australian media represents Indonesia and the countrys transition to civil society.
A Professorial Fellow at RMITs Global Cities Research Institute, Associate
Professor Lewis is available for interview.
