Looking at the Afghanistan debate from another perspective
Freedom Fighter Kay Danes shares her first hand experiences
of life in this war torn country
Kay Danes - author, aid worker and spouse of a Special Forces Soldier (SASR/SOCOMD) is in
Sydney today for the release of her new book Beneath the Pale Blue Burqa: One
Womens Journey through Taliban Strongholds.
As the political debate on Australias continuing involvement in Afghanistan rages on, Ms
Danes, a humanitarian with firsthand experience of life in this re-emerging country, fears
ignorance of the situation in the country will be perpetuated.
"We will most likely hear and see a number of so-called experts coming out and giving their
opinions, and many of course will be well credentialed with a string of academic
qualifications, but most have never set foot in Afghanistan. Have they ever sat down with a
local Afghan farmer or father and asked his thoughts on the war or the young girls attending
university there?
I have! I have done a great deal of work with the people of Afghanistan and have had THE
MOST unique experiences ... visiting remote places even journalists arent permitted to go
and where diplomats are too afraid. As an author and aid worker in Afghanistan and a
Defence Spouse I hope to have the opportunity to participate in these discussions.
I have seen exactly what's been achieved as a result of stabilisation in certain areas. We
have thousands of children in schools getting educated, young men and women in university,
medical clinics getting funded, disabled centres getting noticed and alternative business to
opium production in place such as fruit and poultry farming. Without our troops in
Afghanistan, this stability would disappear in many areas that still need the support of our
troops.

Kay Danes is one of the few internationals that have travelled outside the safe bubble of
Kabul. Her readiness to venture outside the accepted boundaries allows us to see the impact
on Afghans and a real perspective of post Taliban Afghanistan.
