United Nations - State of the World Population Report 2009
Details:
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) State of the Worlds Populations report for 2009 is being launched
in Canberra, 18th November 2009.
This annual report is the most comprehensive report on population, sexual health and womens issues in
development and we expect this report to cover topics such as family planning, women and climate change.
Considerations:
It is becoming increasingly recognised that family planning and sexual and reproductive health can have a
positive impact on climate change
Globally there are 200 million women that want to use contraceptives but cannot access them. That is 200
million women who want to plan their families and reduce the number of children they could potentially
have but are not given the access or opportunity to do so
Solving this family planning crisis will have a massive impact on population growth and therefore climate
change, by lessening the human impact on the environment, as well as giving women the basic right to
plan and decide how many children they have
Interview Opportunity:
Ms Eileen Kelly, Head of Advocacy for Marie Stopes International Australia (MSIA) will be attending the
launch of the report
Ms Kelly has compelling insights into how providing contraceptives to those who want to use them could
impact upon climate change solutions
Examples of how family planning could combat climate change
Interviewee:
Ms Eileen Kelly has over 18 years experience in international development and has significant knowledge and
insights on low-income communities, healthcare and medical services, maternal and infant mortality and sexual
and reproductive health.
MSIA provides life-saving sexual and reproductive health education and services support to women and their
families in eleven countries in the Asia Pacific region and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
