Members of the European Parliament Form "Friends of Gilgit-Baltistan" in the
European Parliament
BRUSSELS, Nov. 6/ PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --
A group of Members of the European Parliament, including Jürgen Creutzmann, have
decided to form a group called "Friends of Gilgit-Baltistan."
There is great concern from these members that the future of Gilgit-Baltistan is being
determined not by the people of Gilgit-Baltistan but by the Government of Pakistan under
the Constitution of Pakistan, even though Gilgit-Baltistan is not mentioned in Pakistan's
Constitution as part of its territory.
It is believed that the future of Gilgit-Baltistan should be determined by their people. It is
this group's belief that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan should be allowed to fashion their future
in a manner thattheir region does not become a territory for the spread of fundamentalist
and extremist tendencies.
It is with a view to help the people of Gilgit-Baltistan fashion a bright future for themselves
that this group formed by Members of the European Parliament, shall monitor very carefully
all developments that take place in Gilgit-Baltistan. It is believed that the ethos of the people
of Gilgit-Baltistan has far more in common with the ethos of Jammu & Kashmir than
Pakistan.
