Press Invitation - The Japan-U.S. Alliance at Fifty - Expert Panel Presentations and Press Conference

In conjunction with 16th Annual Japan-U.S. Security Seminar being sponsored by the Embassy of Japan, the
Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) and Pacific Forum CSIS, two public seminars and a follow-on
press conference will be held addressing the status of the U.S.-Japan alliance.
The first event, "The Challenges Facing the New DPJ Government," will feature presentations by Tokyo
Foundation Chairman Hideki Kato, a member of Government Revitalization Unit of Cabinet Office, Lt. Gen.
Noboru Yamaguchi from the National Defense Academy of Japan and Tokyo Foundation Director of Foreign
and Security Policy Research Tsuneo "Nabe" Watanabe. The speakers will examine the impacts associated
with the coming to power in Tokyo of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). This will take place in the Lower
Level Ballroom at the Willard Hotel in Washington D.C. on Friday, January 15, 2010 from 10:00am-12:00pm.
The second program, "The Japan-U.S. Alliance at Fifty - Where We Have Been; Where We Are Heading" will
focus on the continuing evolution of the alliance, touching on the effects of leadership changes in both
countries, their impacts on alliance management, and possible changes to security policy priorities. An
extended Q&A session will follow the formal presentation. Speakers include Shinichi Kitaoka, University of
Tokyo; William Perry, Former U.S. Secretary of Defense; Richard Armitage; Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of
State and Yukio Okamoto, Former Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan. This event takes place in
the Lower Level Ballroom at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. on Friday, January 15, 2010, from 2:00 -
5:00pm.
The public seminar speakers will also hold a press conference from 5:00 - 5:30pm in the Nest Room,
Mezzanine Level at the Willard Hotel.
Both programs are being sponsored by the Tokyo Foundation and will be moderated by Pacific Forum CSIS
