Stop political executions in Iran

Iranian Ambassador urged to defect,

seek political asylum in Australia

Over 100 Iranian democracy supporters will converge on the Iranian Embassy in the

Canberra suburb of O’Malley tomorrow, January 14, from noon to 2.30pm, to condemn

the use of political executions to suppress the democratic uprising in Iran.

In streets across Iran, on rooftops late at night and city walls, the cry now is "Death to

Khamenei!" and "Death to the dictator!" The nationwide uprisings target the theocracy itself.

Following the huge Ashura holy day protests across the country on January 3, when the Basiji

militia and Islamic Revolutionary Guards opened fire on protesters, wounding hundreds and

killing at least 11, thousands have been arrested. Already five have been condemned to

execution on the grounds that they are ‘waging war on God’.

Both the opposition and the regime are on an irreversible path that can only lead to the latter's

downfall. As the opposition deepens and spreads, the political fissures at the top, including

within the clergy, are expanding. Now five Iranian diplomats in Europe have asked for

political asylum in protest at the repression. The protesters will call on the Iranian

Ambassador to Australia to join them, to hasten the end of the cruel dictatorship.

The real advocates of peace and stability in the region and the wider world must stand on the

side of the Iranian people, and put an end to the shameful concessions to the religious fascism

ruling Iran. This means the United Nations Secretary General, the UN Security Council, the

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the US, the European Union and the

Australian government.
