Stand for Freedom with Therese Rein, Lucy Turnbull and Janelle Saffin, MP in support of Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma

On Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 12:30 pm Janelle Saffin MP, supported by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, will host "Gather For Democracy and Stand for Freedom" ; one of the most important initiatives to be held in Australia to date in support of and in solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma.

Speakers include the wife of the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, and business woman Therese Rein, former Lord Mayor of Sydney, Lucy Turnbull, Australia's National Director of Amnesty International Claire Mallinson, esteemed author Di Morrissey, and a young Australian Burmese woman, Nyein Aye Kyi. The event will open with a song performed by Jenny Morris. Together with other distinguished Australians and Burmese alike, they will gather for fifteen minutes on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, an international symbol renowned for freedom of expression.

The event is Australia's response to Suu Kyi's call "Use your Liberty to Promote Ours."

Saffin created the event to demonstrate Australia's commitment to peacefully promote the core values inherent in a democracy and to send a strong message to the international community about Australia's position on Burma.

Her unique friendship with Aung San Suu Kyi and her support for the people of Burma has been steadfast; all the way to Canberra where she recently introduced a private members motion in Federal Parliament, giving members the opportunity to debate the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Burma.

"Australia is blessed with a strong and vibrant democracy' says Saffin, `We wish that for the courageous, determined and tenacious people of Burma. Our message to Suu Kyi and the Burmese is simple. We stand behind you, beside, you in front of you and in times of trouble, we will keep you in our hearts and minds."

Janelle confirmed that the event proceedings will be reported into Burma.
