Australian Associated Press Appoints Mike Osborne as Editor
Sydney July 22
Australian Associated Press has appointed Mike Osborne to the new position of Editor, effective
October 2008. Mr Osborne has been the AAP Head of Sport and Racing for the past four years.
He will assume responsibility for all day-to-day activities of the Editorial Department, reporting to
Editor-in-Chief, Tony Gillies.
Mr Gillies said: Mike brings a unique depth of news agency skills to the role, as a reporter and
desk editor in news finance and sport and as a foreign correspondent in Beijing and London. His
news judgment, creativity and leadership style will be critical as we continue to meet the
challenges of an ever-changing media landscape and customer needs.
Mr Osborne said: We have an exciting challenge ahead of us as we continue our push into the
digital platforms. We must remain true to our hard-earned reputation for integrity and maintaining
our traditions of high journalistic standards on words, images and data while striving for even
greater speed and efficiencies in breaking news.
AAP Chief Executive Officer, Clive Marshall said: Mike has made an enormous contribution to
the success of the AAP during his 24 years with the company. His journalistic experience and
project management skills will be invaluable in his new role as Editor.
Meanwhile, a restructure of AAP senior management has resulted in Editor-in-Chief Tony Gillies
taking on full responsibility for the final performance of the core news agency business while Kylie
OReilly becomes Managing Director of the Enterprise Division comprising AAP News for
Business, MediaNet and Newscentre.
These changes are designed to provide more focus to the respective businesses and enable
AAP to maximise the opportunities for both the core news agency and our commercial activities,
Mr Marshall said.
