The 33rd Annual Graham Perkin Award - Australian Journalist of the Year
In Association With the Melbourne Press Club Awards for Excellence
The Graham Perkin Award for the Australian Journalist of the Year is
Australia's most prestigious annual recognition of journalistic excellence.
The Graham Perkin Award was instituted in 1976 as a memorial to the
late editor of The Age (1966-1975). This is the 33rd annual award and the
winner will be announced in conjunction with the Melbourne Press Club
Quill Awards for Excellence at a dinner on Friday, March 20, 2009 at the
Crown Palladium, Melbourne. This year the winner will receive a plaque and cheque for $20,000.
Entries for the 2008 award are now being accepted and must be received by Friday, February 6, 2009.
Entry and judging criteria
The Graham Perkin Award is open to any professional journalist whose
work appears in any Australian newspaper or magazine in the previous
year. The award is given to the nominated journalist for excellence of
work in the print medium in a single contribution or series. The award
may also be given for journalistic service in the public interest. Editors
may also be nominated for outstanding leadership and campaigning.
Self-nominations from journalists are welcome.
The judges will consider the following:
* Overall excellence in the print medium
* Quality of writing
* Investigative skills
* Impact and relevance
* Originality and initiative
A nomination letter and three copies of the nominee's work must
be included. These should preferably be in the form of original tear
sheets. However, photocopies or print-outs will be accepted. A
photograph of the nominee should also be included.
