MINISTER CONGRATULATES OPSO AWARD WINNERS

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler congratulates the winners of

the Older People Speak Out (OPSO) Awards held in Brisbane last night.

The Department of Health and Ageing – together with the Office for an Ageing

Australia – sponsored four of this year’s OPSO awards, which recognise the

positive portrayal of older people in our media.

“The winners and nominees of this year’s OPSP Awards have portrayed older

people in light of the active, involved and valuable contributions they make to our

community,” Mr Butler said.

“They have demonstrated excellence in positive reporting on older Australians

and the issues that affect them.

“Acknowledging and respecting the role of older people has always been

important, but it’s becoming even more so with Australia’s rapidly ageing

population.

“I encourage Australia’s media to continue its efforts to promote and celebrate

the contribution of older people in our workplaces and communities.”

Mr Butler said the Gillard Government is taking a whole-of-government approach

to addressing positive ageing, recognising the wide range of factors that support

well-being and independence.

This includes reforms relating to retirement incomes, social and economic

participation, housing, and life-long education.

“The Gillard Government recognises the hard work, dedication and effort over

many years by older Australians that have helped make Australia the country that

it is today.”
