New digital commercial television licences for
Broken Hill and Spencer Gulf
The Australian Communications and Media Authority has allocated new commercial
television broadcasting licences to provide digital-only services in both Broken Hill,
New South Wales and the Spencer Gulf region of South Australia.
The licences were allocated to companies owned by Southern Cross Media, being
Broken Hill Television Pty Limited and Spencer Gulf Telecasters Pty Limited,
respectively.
Decisions about the services to be provided under the licences, including digital
multi-channel services, are a matter for Southern Cross Media.
Southern Cross Media recently announced that a service comprising Nine Network
programming will be provided under the new licences in these areas, commencing
on 31 October 2010.
The Broadcasting Services Act 1992 provides for the allocation of an additional
commercial television broadcasting licence in markets where only two commercial
television broadcasting licences are in force. The additional services to be
broadcast under the licences are to operate in a digital mode only.
Under the government’s digital television switchover timetable, all analog TV
services in the Broken Hill and Spencer Gulf licence areas will be switched off on15
December 2010.
