Mechanical man
Take 5 Latest issue 43, on sale Wednesday, October 20
My hearts in my backpack
A failing heart put Paul on the donor list, but when no heart was
available and his days were numbered, his specialist offered him a
mechanical one. An operation to fit a titanium pump in his chest
linked to an external battery meant Paul had to carry his heart
around in a backpack. The battery-charged heart is keeping him going
until a donor heart is available.
Serving up success
At 11, Matthew already had a drug habit, and was always getting
himself into trouble with the police. But Matthew had one love
cooking. He was inspired by Jamie Oliver, and when the opportunity
came up to work at the restaurant Fifteen in Melbourne, he applied.
Matthews tough life story put him on the short list, and after a
series of elimination tests he made it into Jamies kitchen. Now, at
23, Matthew is a successful chef looking to help other problem kids.
Lucky escape
Off for an evening walk with his wife, Andrew watched as three
teenagers skylarked about throwing a chunk of timber into the raging
Nerang River. When one fell in and screamed for help Andrew raced to
his aid, but the boy was stuck in a drain. Courageously, Andrew kept
the boy afloat until more help came. Andrew is just one of many
Aussie local heroes.
