MEDIA RELEASE
EMBARGOED UNTIL 4PM THURSDAY DECEMBER 10, 2009
The Australian Financial Review Magazine profiles the Albert family, a
fascinating music publishing dynasty that has survived five generations.
Notoriously publicity-shy, no family member has spoken more than a few
sentences to the media until now.
On the eve of the family company's 125th anniversary, patriarch Robert Albert
and his son David Albert speak exclusively to Katrina Strickland about the
company's history, the family ethos, and how it is navigating the tumultuous
changes to today's music sector.
Sydney, Australia December 10, 2009 From humble beginnings as a watch and
clock repair shop in Sydney's Newtown in the late 1880s, Alberts has become one of
the country's biggest and longest-standing independent music publishing companies.
It holds the Australasian rights to a string of international hits dating back to George
Gershwin and Cole Porter, and is the name behind many of the big Australian hits of
the 1970s and 1980s, including It's a Long Way to the Top (if you want to Rock `n'
Roll), Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, Love is in the Air and T.N.T.
It was also there at the start of commercial radio and television, helped establish the
forerunner to the ABC, gave Baz Luhrmann his big break with Strictly Ballroom, and
created two of Sydney's most renown harbourside homes, the Spanish mission-style
Boomerang in Elizabeth Bay, and Coolong in Vaucluse.
It's role as a cultural forerunner essentially stopped in the late 1980s however, and
David Albert, the fifth generation to run the company, must find a new path forward.
