101 COMPOSITIONS ADD LUSTRE TO CONCERT PROGRAM
A new work by pre-eminent composer and National Living Treasure Peter Sculthorpe will be a
highlight of the Sydney Conservatorium of Musics 2010 concert program and a jewel in the crown
of The Cons 101 Compositions for 100 Years project.
The Cons Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Imre Palló will premiere the work as
part of the Conductors Series a performance that will help round-out Emeritus Professor
Sculthorpes commitment to the 101 Compositions project as a Marquee Composer and contributing
lecturer.
The newly commissioned work is for string orchestra and narrator. Professor Palló will be supported
by two Doctor of Musical Arts students.
We are so chuffed that Peter will be helping us lead the charge of both our concert series and 101
project next year, commented Dean and Principal, Professor Kim Walker.
There will be many highpoints in the 2010 program, but this work and its performance will add a
special lustre, and surely be a concert that will generate great admiration.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic will be at the centre of another standout performance of a 101
Compositions orchestral work, Symphony No 4, Los Angeles.
The work, scheduled for the 26 and 27 March Uncommon Fanfare in LA Conductors Series
concert, is co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Canberra International Music Festival
and The Con. It will involve Maestro Imre Palló and Timo-Veikko Valve (cello), performing courtesy of
the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
The Cons 2010 program includes more than 170 free and ticketed events - from February to
November embracing the Sensational Sundays Series, Cocktail Hour Recital Series, Lunchbreak
Concerts, Open Academy Rising Stars Series, Conductors Series, Opera Program and Jazz in the Café.
A major value-add will be the showcasing of an array of premiere performances of 101 Compositions
commissioned as part of the ISCM World New Music Days Festival in Sydney in May.
The Con will be co-hosting the festival along with the Aurora Festival and ABC Classic FM, in
collaboration with the Australian Music Centre and supported by Australia Council for the Arts and
Ars Musica Australis. It will involve musicians and composers from 50 countries.
