Australian Idol joins RMIT
Former Australian Idol contestant and musician, Bobby Flynn, is sharing his insider
knowledge of the workings of the music industry through a lecture program at
RMIT University.
Mr Flynn is undertaking a series of lectures to teach students about contemporary
and legal issues facing the music industry as part of the Bachelor of Arts (Music
Industry) program.
Over the last 10 years the music industry has changed dramatically, with
technology and delivery of music, Mr Flynn said.
The most exciting aspects are trends within existing and emerging markets.
Being an artist today, you can communicate internationally through technology;
sitting in Melbourne or Sydney you can deliver your work instantly to places like the
UK or Japan.
The lecture program examines a range of issues in this flux, looking at legal,
copyright, management, publishing as well as what to look for in a record deal.
After graduating with a Business degree from the University of Queensland, Mr
Flynn followed his passion and moved into music as a performer and writer,
resulting in national exposure on the 2006 series of Australian Idol.
School of Creative Media lecturer, Barry Hill, approached Mr Flynn to join the
program as a sessional lecturer this year, after he delivered a highly successful
guest lecture in 2008.
As a performer, I think Bobby gives us really good insight into the way the industry
is working, Mr Hill said.
He has an academic background as well as industry experience so I think he will
add a lot of insight into the program.
The Bachelor of Arts (Music Industry) is a multidisciplinary vocational degree
designed to give students who have completed a Diploma (or Advanced Diploma)
of Music Performance or Music Business (or equivalent) the opportunity to
continue their studies with a focus on performance, sound production or music
business.
